January 2020 | Reading Wrap Up
Every year, January is one of my strongest months for reading. Maybe it's got to do with the fact that I never read as much in December due to the holidays or because of the motivation that comes with a new Goodreads goal. However, this year I didn't do as good as I'd hoped. For the whole month I felt like reading everything which made it really difficult for me to actually choose what to read next. That made me start and make my way through a bunch of books but only manage to finish a few.
1) Ninth House, Leigh Bardugo
This was my most anticipated book of last year and, after getting it for Christmas, I started it right away. I absolutely love Leigh and this book intrigued me so much, I'm glad to say it did not disappoint. We follow a girl named Alex Stern as she get sucked into the world of Yale University's secret societies and then comes a story full of mysteries and action and it's just brilliant. The first 100 or so pages were a bit on the slower side but once the action started going, it was all I could think about. Really entertaining read and I can't wait for the next books in this series. 4.5/5 ⭐️.
2) The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas
I'll have a full review for this book up next week, so I won't say too much here but oh, boy, this book. I believe this is the most important and powerful book I've ever read. Gobbled it all up in a day and feel like I'll keep it with me for many many years to come. Exceptionally written, incredibly emotional and makes you think so much. Everyone needs to read this. 5/5 ⭐️.
3) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, J. K. Rowling
Last year I finally started rereading the Harry Potter series for the FIRST TIME (I know, I'm shocked too). I first read this series back at the very start of 2013 and I've always wanted to reread it, but only finally started last October. Books 1-4 I read the Illustrated Edition and, since I don't physically own books 5-7 in English, I got the eBooks. This has been one of my favourite experiences because I didn't realise how much I missed this world, even though I watch the films pretty regularly. And book 5 was the biggest surprise so far. It was the first one in this reread that I wasn't expecting what was coming next, I was just fully immersed in it, couldn't put it down (even though I knew what was gonna happen) and I think it's my favourite so far. And let me tell you, this was such a biggest surprise. Because of the movie probably (which, let's face it, it's far from the best one) I had so engrained in me that it was the one that I liked the least, that when I realised I was loving it probably a tad more than the other I was shook. Also, I think the fact that I wasn't looking forward to whatever was coming and was simply into what was happening contributed hugely to that as well. All in all, this reread has been perfect. 5/5 ⭐️ obviously.
And that was it! As I said, I started a bunch of books but haven't managed to finish them just yet. Because I am still reading them I'll talk about all of those in my February TBR, so look forward to that. What did you manage to read in January? Let me know!
Love,
N.
