Top 10 Series I Want to Read in 2020

I love book series. There's something about being with characters you love for more than just one book that really appeals to me, but they also mean that, if you read the books as they come out, you have to wait for ages before you get to finish their story and, inevitably, you'll get behind on some.

My last post was all about the books I'd like to read this year and this one, is all about the series. I've got 5 that I'm currently in the middle of and would love to finish/catch up on and 5 that I haven't started but I've either 1) got the first book a while ago and would love to finally read it or 2) have been interested in for so long and would love to get to them.

1) The Mortal Instruments, Cassandra Clare

This is my top priority for one reason only: if I don't finish this goddamned series this year, I'm giving up and unhauling all the books. Seriously. It feels like I've been reading it for ages and I even decided to read them all by publication date seen as I expected to like The Infernal Devices more (which based on book one, I do) but I'm still only halfway through it. My problem with these books (besides the second one being a DRAG and me almost DNFing it) is that I'm not particularly fond of Clary. I've been reading one of them each year but I'm determined to read the last three in 2020.

2) The Infernal Devices, Cassandra Clare

After the last one I think that this was expected, but still, I'd love to read this trilogy this year. I've read book one and own book two and, hopefully, the fact that I really enjoyed the first one will make me read the Mortal Instruments quick enough for me to read this too. Also, there's a new book coming out this year that's supposed to follow the children from this series. I'm not sure if I'll read it but I'd like to be caught up in case I do decide to.

3) The Throne of Glass Series, Sarah J. Maas

This is another series that feels like I've been reading for ages (and that's because I have). It did take me a while to carry on reading it and, as of right now, I have only two books to go. I realise that these books aren't perfect but I thoroughly enjoy them and need to see how it all ends.

4) The Kingkiller Chronicles, Patrick Rothfuss

I read The Name of The Wind back in 2017 and it quickly became one of my favourite books of all time. However, because there's no prospect of when the third book's coming out, I've been putting off reading the second one for the longest time. I do think it's about time I did it. I've yet to decide whether I'll reread the first one or not, but I'm definitely catching up on this series this year.

5) The Illuminae Files, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I started reading this trilogy the year the last one came out and have been reading them once a year for two years now. I loved the first two books so much, which was totally unexpected seen as I never thought I liked sci-fi but I'm desperate to see how this series ends.

Now onto the series I'd like to start and finish/catch up on.

6) The Lord of The Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien

I've owned the whole box set (and I'm including The Hobbit on this one) for a couple of years now. I watched the first film when I was a child, fell asleep and declared to the whole world that I hated it, then I rewatched it a few years ago and loved it. But watching the first film made me realise I really wanted to read the books before watching the rest and, because I've been procrastinating it (these books intimidate me for some reason) I've yet to do either.

7) Nevernight, Jay Kristoff

The reason why I haven't yet started this series is the most ridiculous thing in the world but basically, I wanted the UK hardbacks, waited too long to buy book 2 because I wanted to read book 1 first, they all got out of print and now I can't decide if I want to get the American hardbacks for the last two books or if I want to get the UK paperbacks. I'll decide that hopefully soon, because everyone loves this series so much, I need to read it.

8) Mistborn Era 1, Brandon Sanderson

Do I have enough big high-fantasy books on my list yet? Brandon Sanderson is probably the king of fantasy books. I've always been intimidated by them not only because of their length but, mostly, because I never knew where to start. After much research and some lovely people on the internet, I think I've cracked the code and this is the year I finally read some of Sanderson's books. I shall be following Becklepanda's beautiful advice in regards of the order but, if you're also interested in starting to read his books and are a bit lost, the lovely Rachael Marie is hosting the year-long Cosmerealong, dedicating the year to reading the books set in the Cosmere world. I might be participating in some of it, but I'm also interested in reading the Mistborn Era 2 and they didn't include it.

9) Arc of a Scythe, Neal Shusterman

This is a series that has intrigued me since it came out a few years ago and, seen as the last instalment just came out at the end of last year, I figured it'd be the perfect time to marathon it all (particularly since, if it is as good as everyone says, I'll want to read the other books ASAP).

10) The Cassidy Blake Series, Victoria Schwab

If you've been following me for a while, especially on Twitter, you'll know that Victoria is my all time favourite author. No one can make me feel like she does and no one makes me as mesmerised by their writing skills. I think she is the most brilliant author there is and have yet to encounter any books as unique as hers. This is the last series of hers I've yet to pick up (besides Everyday Angel which is getting reprinted this year) and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to read the first two books before the last one comes out this Fall.

Whilst making this list I noticed that there are several other series I'd love to read this year, so thought I'd share them as some honorable mentions. The first one is The Diviners, by Libba Bray. Back when I was just getting into the Booktube world (before even considering making videos myself) the first book in this series was all the rage and, after joining the community and realising it was a series, I became even more intrigued. The last book comes out this year and, although I'm sure I won't be able to read them all before it does, I'd love to get to them sooner rather than later. The Winternight Trilogy, by Katherine Arden is another very beloved series in the book blogging world and another one that came to a conclusion in this past year. I've heard the writing and the story is beautiful and I cannot wait to read it. And finally, the Strange the Dreamer duology, by Laini Taylor. This is another one in the same veins as Nevernight, which I wanted to read since it came out but couldn't decide on which cover to get and, when I finally wanted the UK hardback, that was out of print. At least I don't own any of the books so I can by the US covers and get done with it, seen as it's another one that's peeked my interest for years.

Well, I guess that if I want to read all these series I better get started then 😂. Jokes aside, I do hope I can at least read all the ones that I own but, considering how well I've done with marathoning series in the past couple of years, I expect some of the ones that are already done will be read as well.
